The dilemma of xenotransplantation.

چکیده
To the Editor: I read with considerable interest Robert E. Michler’s commentary on xenotransplantation (1). From my point of view, that of a basic virologist, the dilemma is not to know in what “foreseeable future, clinical xenotransplantation may achieve its targeted goal of extended graft survival,” but what deadly emerging infectious disease, most probably viral in nature, would arise in a recipient of a baboon or chimpanzee heart. While we face the terrific threat of AIDS, which clearly emerged from Africa and non-human primates 40 to 50 years ago, we are preparing a new infectious “Chernobyl.” Monkeys and apes harbor approximately 50 simian viruses; some of them pose a serious threat to humans, especially the heavily immunosuppressed. Recently, an outbreak of encephalitis related to a new type of reovirus (2) occurred among baboons from a colony used in human organ transplants. Moreover, once unknown or unrecognized simian viruses, like HIV, may be efficient invaders of the entire earth’s population. Xenotransplantation does not simply pose an ethical problem; it concerns the survival of the human species, an endangered species if transplant practitioners continue their course. Ronald Montalero, a virologist, was right when he said “unknown viruses were always a major concern in xenotransplants” (2). A moratorium on these procedures seems the best solution until all simian pathogens are identified and the risks they pose to humans are clearly established.

P-45: Xenotransplantation of Mouse Ovaries into Pseudopregnant Rat Uteri
Background Xenotransplantation of ovary can help individuals who may be at sterility risk after chemotherapy or radiotherapy of diseases such as cancer. Moreover, this technique can be used to preserve fertility of valuable animal species. The aim of the present study was to preserve balb/c mice ovarian tissue by xenotransplantation into uterus of rat that is immune suppressed. MaterialsAndMeth...
متن کاملXenotransplantation: perspectives and limits.
Xenotransplantation faces the dilemma of an unlimited supply of cells, tissues and organs on the one hand and severe obstacles and limits on the other. One reason for the limitations is that the source animal of choice, the pig, and the human recipient separated 90 million years ago during evolution, a time in which biological characteristics such as anatomy, physiology and immunology have had ...

Background In vitro culturing and retransplantion of vitrified- warmed ovarian tissue are two ways to restore fertility after radiation or chemotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of apoptosis in vitrified human ovarian tissue after warming, long term culturing and xenotransplantation by morphological analyses and apoptosis genes expression evaluation. متن کاملIntrauterine xenotransplantation of human Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the liver of rabbit fetuses: A preliminary study for in vivo expression of the human liver genes
Objective(s): End-stage hepatic failure is a potentially life-threatening condition for which orthotopic liver transplantation is the only effective treatment. However, a shortage of available donor organs for transplantation each year results in the death of many patients waiting for liver transplantation. Xenotransplantation, or the transplantation of cells, tissues, or organs between differe...
متن کاملO-34: Cytoplasmic Transplantation in Oocytes Obtained from Ovarian Tissue Xenotransplantation Lead to Reduced Apoptosis and Higher Fertilization Rate
Background Although ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation is used for fertility preservation in patient undergoing cytotoxic treatments but obtaining good quality oocyte is still a debate. Xenotransplantation has been introduced as a reliable technique for better understanding of the transplantation conditions, but to achieve healthy embryos, the quality of obtained oocytes need t...
